Patti Scialfa, a member of the E Street Band and wife of Bruce Springsteen, recently revealed her years-long battle with cancer.

During the September 8 premiere of Rock Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band at the Toronto International Film Festival, Scialfa disclosed that she was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2018. The condition, which affects the immune system, led her to make the difficult decision to step back from touring alongside her husband and the band.

“This impacts my immune system, so I have to be mindful of what I do and where I go,” Scialfa shared. “Occasionally, I’ll join a show or two and sing a few songs on stage—that’s been a real treat. It’s my new normal, and I’m OK with that.”

In an earlier interview with Asbury Park Press, Scialfa explained her decision to limit her appearances during Springsteen’s current tour, which began in February 2023. She chose instead to focus on her solo album and spend more time with her granddaughter, Lily Springsteen, who was born in July 2022. Reflecting on her role in the band, Scialfa remarked, “With so many musicians on stage, I didn’t feel as needed. After a few shows, I realized everything was running smoothly, and I could step back without taking anything away.”

She also used this time to complete her record, a project she found challenging to finish when Springsteen was home. “Bruce is in the studio all the time, so this was an opportunity for me to focus on my work,” she added.

Health struggles have also impacted Springsteen himself. In September 2023, he postponed the remainder of his tour due to ongoing treatment for peptic ulcer disease. He faced another setback in early summer 2024, canceling three dates due to vocal issues.
